Our Story

A place where true Bernese Mountain Dogs belong

Lonesome Pine Farm sits in Soldiers Grove, outside La Crosse, Wisconsin, on a 160-acre farm in the beautiful Driftless region. With plenty of pastures and woods to run in and explore, it's the perfect place to raise Bernese Mountain Dogs.

Our dogs' coats are especially thick and shiny, and their bodies strong and muscled — the kind of Berner that could pull milk carts all day, just as the breed was originally bred to do as farm dogs in Bern, Switzerland.

They love playing in the field and roaming the farm, but every one of them is a house dog — usually underfoot, or trying to climb into your lap. They're wonderful companions who need to be next to you whenever possible.

Devoted companions

Berners bond deeply with their families. Ours are raised in the house from day one — expect a 90-pound lap dog who wants to be wherever you are.

Built for work & play

Bred as Swiss farm dogs to pull milk carts, Berners are strong, sturdy, and athletic. Our dogs run pastures and woods daily, building thick coats and muscled frames.

Raised the right way

Well-socialized, health-tested parents and a lifetime of support. New owners keep in touch and send pictures — our puppies stay part of the family.

We've been awarded Good Dog's "Great" recognition badge for health testing practices. This recognition distinguishes breeders who demonstrate a high commitment to the health of their dogs by performing the "Great" level of health testing on their breeding dogs, as outlined in Good Dog's Bernese Mountain Dog health testing guidelines.

Puppies

A couple of litters each year, worth the wait

We usually have a couple of litters annually. All of our available dogs and puppies are listed on our Good Dog profile, where you can apply, ask questions, and complete your reservation through Good Dog's secure payment system.

Safe, simple payments. All deposits and payments are handled through Good Dog's protected payment platform — never wire transfers or cash apps.

One thing we ask of every family: new owners keep in contact and send us pictures. Our puppies are family for life.

Do your research — we mean it

We encourage every prospective puppy owner to come prepared with questions. Make sure you're choosing not just the right breed, but the right breeder.

Is a Berner right for you?

Berners are large, devoted, and shed generously. They need daily exercise and — above all — your company. If you want an independent dog, this isn't the breed. If you want a shadow, welcome home.

Ask us about health testing

A responsible breeder should welcome questions about hips, elbows, eyes, heart, and genetic testing. Ask us anything — we'll show you the results.

Meet the parents

Temperament is inherited and learned. Ask how the parents live, how puppies are socialized, and what a typical day on the farm looks like.
